Any mac user, specially a new one like me, whose moved over from windows, will definitely come across this problem. If you have portable external hdd's, and if they are formatted in ntfs, you will realize when you plug them into a mac, that you can read files from it, but wont be able to write files onto it. The native OS X ntfs driver supports only read functionality. There is, however, like for most things, a hack.
You need to have the following software before you can proceed.
MacFuse: http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
Fink: http://www.finkproject.org/download/index.php?phpLang=en
Xcode developer tool: This is available on Apple's website, but you will need to log in with your existing Apple Id into ADC (Apple developer community) member site, or create a new account, and then download this tool.

Once you have all these downloaded onto your Mac:
-run the installer for MacFuse.
-install the xcode tool.
-run the installer for fink
-drag the fink commander application into your applications folder

Next you need to configure Fink, using the following commands:
- /sw/bin/fink configure
- /sw/bin/fink selfupdate
- /sw/bin/fink index
- /sw/bin/fink scanpackages
- /sw/bin/fink install ntfs-3g

Choose the default option for all questions during the configuration process (i.e. hit enter for default option), except when asked a question about unstable tree, choose Yes.

Reboot and you should be able to read & write from a ntfs partition.
